How to cure baldness?

If the baldness is due to reversible causes, then you can easily cure it by treating the cause, however for that you need to do a consultation with a doctor who can suggest the right remedy. For example, you can easily treat hair loss due to anaemia by making up for the deficiency of iron in the body.

If your problem is male pattern baldness, then also you should see a doctor who can suggest the treatment. The doctor can diagnose the exact cause of your baldness and see if it’s not due to any medical condition or any other cause. The doctor can also carry out some blood tests, if you feel symptoms such as tiredness.

Among treatments, some people opt for wigs or a hair transplant, which is considered as the most direct form of treatment. Some people may also take herbal supplements that contain zinc, magnesium, iron, vitamin E in various combinations to treat the reversible causes of baldness.

Some people may opt for prescribed drug treatment for pattern baldness. Propecia is the latest treatment that is considered quite effective. It not only stops the hair loss but can also result in new hair growth, however it should not be taken without the consent of a registered medical doctor.

Prescribed drugs often result in some undesirable side effects, so Propecia is no exception and can cause complications, if it’s unsuitable for you. The doctor can check the suitability of prescribed drug for you by doing a thorough medical examination. If required, even some medical tests as well.

Hair Transplant

Here’s some good news for those looking to get a hair transplant done. Modern hair transplants involve the transplant of intact hair-follicular units from the permanent hair-bearing areas of the scalp, beard and the body to the bald/balding parts of the scalp. These follicular units comprise intact hair roots. After transplant, these go into an initial dormancy phase, and then, the hair regrowth in the transplanted area takes between 4 to 10 months. The transplanted hair can then be cut or even shaved; and it keeps growing till the person’s ripe old age.

There are two different ways of extracting the donor hair to be used for transplant. But, before that, it is important to know the difference between both the methods, so that one can choose which method best suits him.

  1. The strip FUHT
  2. The stitchless FUSE/fue.

In strip FUHT method, a hair-bearing strip of the scalp tissue is taken from the back and sides of the scalp. The strip wound is then closed using stitches/surgical staples. The hair above the suture covers it. The advantage of this method is that this is a fast procedure and about 4,000 to 5,000 follicular unit grafts can be transplanted in a single day.

However, the disadvantage of this is that it is a more invasive process. The surgical suture necessitates the use of medication for a few days after the procedure. In addition, the suture wound will be visible if the hair is buzz cut or shaved.

In the stitchless FUSE/fue method, follicular unit grafts are extracted one by one utilizing tiny surgical instruments. The resultant wound is very small and heals by itself in a few days. There is no need of any sutures. The advantage of this method is that since there are no sutures, there is no suture scar. The patient can buzz cut his hair in the donor area without any telltale suture line being visible. And, if you like to keep your hair very short, this method will suit you.

Being a less invasive and stitchless procedure, pain medications are not required. The post transplant period is much more comfortable.

In addition, FUSE enables the extraction of hair follicular units from the beard and body donor areas (something that is not advisable with a strip). This greatly augments the donor hair availability in suitable patients, thus enabling more complete hair restorations. The disadvantage of this method is that it is necessary to buzz cut the scalp donor area to enable follicular unit extractions. For some individuals, this may not fit in with their social commitments.

Among the various causes for hair loss, the commonest is male pattern baldness, scientifically called androgenic alopecia. This type of baldness is DHT induced hair loss in genetically susceptible individuals. DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is a derivative of the male hormone testosterone. Raised testosterone levels, often due to use of testosterone supplements (as well as anabolic steroids), leads to raised DHT levels at relatively young age. This may cause hair loss/baldness at a young age in the susceptible individual.

One of the first steps in stopping further hair loss, therefore, is to stop using such supplements. Use of DHT blockers, like finasteride, is the recommended medical measure to stop the progression of pattern hairloss.

The other FDA approved medication for hairloss is Minoxidil.

It is a good idea to give medications a trial before resorting to surgical hair restorations. Do not start taking these medicines on your own. It’s recommended that medicines be used only after consulting a doctor and under his supervision.

Another necessity for healthy hair growth is a clean and healthy scalp. Noticing hair fall, some people become so apprehensive they do not wash the head thoroughly for fear of losing more hair.

This may lead to dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. As a result, when they do wash the scalp, the bath tub may be filled with a week’s worth of hair fall. This becomes a vicious cycle. Such a situation must be avoided.

Regular cleaning, oiling, etc have their role in keeping the scalp healthy.
